Three-hundred fifty swimmers invaded East Kentwood High School April 15-17 for the Michigan Masters Swimming State Championship. FAST sent a team of 61 swimmers, including 27 females and 34 males. FAST had 341 individual entries and 44 relays. Every single FAST swimmer scored points for the team.
FAST took second place in the team championship category while the Battle Creek YMCA won their first ever State Championship with over 80 swimmers. The Lansing/Grand Rapids group took third, Milford Athletic Club fourth, Dutch Masters was fifth, Ann Arbor was sixth and Doughboy Athletics was seventh.
In the female division, Battle Creek Y took 1st, followed by Milford and FAST. In the male division, Battle Creek Y captured 1st, followed by the Lansing/Grand Rapids team, and then FAST.
New friends were made, and personal best times were set left and right. Three FAST members celebrated birthdays over the weekend: Jill Guerrera, Crista Kunkel and Lindsey Kuehn. New FAST member Mark VanderMey, 45, set state records in the breaststroke events.
Individuals honored with the "High Point" awards included FAST members Reggie Ray, 84, Jim Pogue, 50, Mary Dehn, 65, Wendy Sanders, 34, and Barbara Church, 59. Those swimmers scored more points than anyone else in their age groups.
